January 2016 - Marcy Marcus

201601MarcyMarcusFor Marcy Marcus, volunteerism is woven in the very fabric of her life. Raised in Fair Lawn, her parent’s leadership roles in B’nai Brith and Hadassah organizations prepped her for the active participant that she is in the Shomrei Torah community.

Marcy attended the University of Michigan, and it was there, on the very first day, that she met her husband Dave. She was a freshman moving into the dorms and Dave was part of the sophomore contingent helping newcomers settle in. Shortly after her college graduation, Dave and Marcy married. They settled in Wayne in 1977. Having graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, Psychology and Education, Marcy tutors high school students in math and subs in the Wayne School system.

Family is extremely important to Marcy. She has two wonderful children, Stacy and Brian. Brian and his wife Jessica have given Marcy and Dave their first grandchild, Ethan. They tremendously enjoy having this newest member of their family.

Marcy credits her parents as having the most influence on her life. They were powerful role models, not only for their support of Israel and their volunteerism, but also for their innate values of respect and kindness. Marcy says “my mother is the most positive person I know.” At 93 she is totally content with her family and life.

After the young family’s move to Wayne, they were looking for a synagogue when their daughter Stacy was entering 3rd grade. Marcy had grown up in a conservative congregation (Fair Lawn Jewish Center) and was looking for a place with a warm, homey feel. They found all that and more at Shomrei Torah. Marcy felt that it was important to give her children the “tools” to be a knowledgeable participant in Jewish community life. The egalitarian feel of the synagogue appealed to Marcy, and the friendships that they made have nurtured the family to this day.
