June/July 2015- George Hirschberg
What is it about Paterson that has positively nurtured so many of our congregation?
George Hirschberg, born and raised in Paterson, is another illustrious example! A graduate of Eastside High, George continued his education at William Paterson University where he majored in Education (and met Phil Nuccetelli, his fraternity brother since 1961!) George first started out as a teacher, became an administrator and is currently an adjunct professor at Rutger’s, Graduate School of Education. George credits Moe Liss (most recently honored by the Jewish Historical Society of North Jersey), for having been a source of influence on his life. “Moe was an exceptional teacher and it was because of his guidance that I decided to go into education.”
George met his lovely wife, Roz, when she was a teacher in Paterson. They were introduced and the rest as they say is history. George & Roz will be celebrating 44 years of marriage in October! A few years after they married, George and Roz moved to Wayne and became members of Shomrei Torah. George stated that they were drawn to Shomrei Torah, members now for 33 years, for its emphasis on tradition. Their sons, Marc and Rob, were part of the many Bar Mitzvah classes. George and Roz are proud they have continued and maintained many friendships made at Shomrei from the very beginning.
Marc and wife Stacy, a teacher in Wayne, live in Livingston. Rob, with his wife, Samantha, and granddaughter, Lexi, live in West Windsor.
George and Roz spend much time in Florida, meeting with friends, playing tennis, golf and canasta, (and add Mah Jong for Roz!). George also plays “pickleball ,” a game gaining popularity in Florida. (FYI – pickleball is a fun sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong and can be played both indoors or outdoors on a badminton-sized court with a paddle and plastic ball.)
George and Roz take pleasure in traveling and have fond memories of their trip to Israel (Roz especially liked the bullet factory in Rehovot!)
As a member of Shomrei Torah, George has been an active participant in morning Minyan and Shabbat services and ushers during the High Holidays. A valued supporter of Shomrei Torah’s Men’s Club, he established our very successful “Super Bowl Pool” and also helps to maintain the areas inside the building as well as grounds of the synagogue.
Thank you George for all that you do!
