Religious School at Shomrei Torah works in partnership with the home to foster a commitment to Judaism and Israel.
We provide the foundation for our students to pursue a lifelong study of torah, Shabbat and festivals, ethics, traditions and history. Our students
understand the basic meaning of the prayers and are able to participate fully in religious services. At our school, our students observe and share life cycle events with Jews and others. Through a variety of formal and informal educational experiences,
our students have the opportunity to develop a personal connection to God, a sense of the beauty of Judaism, and the expanse of Jewish thought. By understanding Conservative Judaism and its traditions and values, our students are empowered to make choices as members of the Jewish community and the greatuer community of which we are a part.
The school also provides both remedial and enrichment education. Shomrei Torah offers a successful Hebrew High School program as well. This class meets once a week and is for students
entering eighth, ninth, and tenth grades. Many of our high school students also elect to attend our mentoring program, so that they can tutor younger students on Sundays. Membership
is not required for enrollment in the high school program, which culminates in a Confirmation ceremony.
It is our mission that each child be the beneficiary of a meaningful and thorough Jewish education. Through expert and caring instruction by a committed faculty and exciting, interactive learning techniques, our students will experience a Judaism that imbues all aspects of one's life. Our Religious school dedicates its efforts to exposing the students to a sense of a Jewish past, present and future.
We aim to do so through the following educational components:
Prayer: a Jewish child should be comforatable in approaching God within a traditional framework. Therefore, we emphasize orienting the student with the Siddur, the synagogue service and the concept of prayer. Each class leads and participates in a Shabbat class service.
Tanach: The Bible is the ancient anthology of Jewish self-awareness and belief. Students will learn the stories and ethical laws of the Torah, followed by a study of the Prophets. Through art, activities and stories, the characters and messages of the Bible will be brought to life.
Practical Judaism: The life of a Jew is marked by ritual. The study of life-cycle events, the Holy days, Shabbat and other observances will familiarize the student with "hands-on" Judaism.
Ethics: Judaism is a privilege - an opportunity to perform Mitzvot and recognize our unique destiny. Throughout his/her years in religious school, the student will be challenged with the ultimate question: Why be Jewish? This strand of the curriculum will suggest viable answers to students of all ages.
Advanced grades will investigate the Holocaust from a sensitive perspective.
Our goal is for children to embark on a fabulous and exciting voyage to learn about their heritage. It is a fun-filled trip filled with adventure that will teach them experiences that will guide them for the rest of their lives. May they always continue to go from "strength to strength."
