Operation Isaiah is a High Holiday project of Shomrei Torah, originally conceived by the United Synagogue for Conservative Judaism.
This Mitzvah Event consists of the following:
Beginning on Rosh Hashanah, grocery bags with lists of requested items will be available in the lobby of the synagogue. Families are asked to take one home, go to the supermarket and fill it with the suggested personal care, cleaning, or paper products to be returned to the synagogue prior to the Kol Nidre service. These items will be donated to the Wayne Interfaith Network, an all volunteer, non-profit, tax exempt organization that operates a food and basic necessities pantry here in Wayne, for distribution to our own citizens, our neighbors. WIN also assists in housing issues and other referral services. The WIN volunteers come from churches, synagogues and other organizations throughout Wayne.
Additionally, families are encouraged to bring loose change, dollar bills or checks.
ALL MONIES AND GOODS MUST BE COLLECTED BEFORE THE KOL NIDRE SERVICE BEGINS.
We encourage you to use this project as a hands-on lesson in tzedakah (giving) and gemillut hasadim (deeds of lovingkindness) for your children. We suggest that you bring the OPERATION ISAIAH bag to the supermarket and ask your children to help select items to fill it.
IF YOU HAVE NEVER GIVEN BEFORE, PLEASE CONSIDER GIVING THIS YEAR. THE ECONOMY HAS SENT ADDITIONAL CLIENTS TO OUR DOORS (ALL CLIENTS ARE SCREENED BY WAYNE SOCIAL SERVICES), AND OUR SUPPLIES ARE QUITE DEPLETED. IF YOU HAVE GIVEN IN THE PAST, CONSIDER ADDING ONE OR MORE ADDITIONAL ITEMS TO YOUR BAG.
THE HIGH HOLIDAY COLLECTIONS ARE DESIGNED TO HELP KEEP THE PANTRY FUNCTIONING OVER THE COURSE OF THE YEAR ALONG WITH MONTHLY CHURCH AND OTHER ORGINIZATION COLLECTIONS.
Please help. It is a mitzvah (commandment). It is a good deed. It embodies the spirit of Judaism and good citizenship.
Shana Tova and thank you.
