Sisterhood...not a Grandmother's thing - not a Mother's thing - a Woman's Thing
Sisterhood at Shomrei Torah is an arm of the Women's League for Conservative Judaism, an organization of synagogue women dedicated to the perpetuation of Judaism. Any woman joining Shomrei Torah automatically receives her first year's membership in Sisterhood for free. Sisterhood contributes so much to the Shomrei Torah's vitality - spiritually, financially educationally and socially. It's goal is to build and sustain a warm, inclusive Conservative synagogue community, encouraging and strengthening identity, knowledge and commitment through enhanced participation in Jewish life.
Our Sisterhood is involved in activities that enrich our congregation, support our Religious School, enhance our youth programs and benefit our community. Activities include: supplying food, cake and candy for holidays; making and delivering Purim baskets for the entire congregation; sponsoring Sukkot and Shavuot luncheons; providing Judaica and Gift Cards (Scrip) through our gift shop for Bar/Bat Mitzvahs and other occassions; comedy night, food tasting, get-togethers with other local Sisterhoods, and seminars on women's health issues, just to name a few.
As concerned modern Jewish women, we also provide educational opportunities for growth. Our Walk-a-thon for Breast Cancer and our devotion to Torah Fund are just some examples. Fostering a sense of communal responsibility on the part of our members is also a major part of what we do. Our programs are designed to enhance personal growth, Jewish involvment, a feeling of community or for just having fun.
Membership brings with it membership in the Women's League for Conservative Judaism and all the other benefits offered by that national organization. Inluded is a subscription to WLCJ's informative Outlook Magazine, which covers women's issues, art, health, family, books and much, much more!
